AESTHETICS

Doesn’t everyone like beautiful art

The idea of a ‘collective’ or ‘shared interest’ group is a strange thing to me as I feel much more comfortable working on my own. However, despite this i feel that it will be useful in allowing me to see what others are doing who share similar interest as I do, which is something I feel that I was lacking last year.

For instance, despite the fact that we are in different groups, I have already been told that there is an individual in another group who works in a similar fashion as I do do, his work reminiscent of photorealism something that I remain interested in. Hopefully when we have the ability to expand the parameter of our collaboration I will have a conversation with him.

The similar interest around out group come out of a confinement (hiding) or work to a degree, appropriation, a lack of focus in terms of what we are trying to achieve as well as there being a number of process that we go through in order to make our work.

Although all of our work looks vastly different it is nice to be a part of a group that shares similar interest as you can bounce ideas off each other allowing you to assess your work differently, as well as another idea as develop your practise.

I had a very successful group crit (with myself, my group and the tutor). The outcome was that we really narrowed or focus and similarities as a group (however our practise remains diverse) whilst lessening the numbers of our group. With a common artist reference in John Baldassari we are now working on finding a common text that united the group as well as developing a nber of ideas in relation to the End of Term exhibition.

What I enjoy about John Baldessari is his used of imagery (esp portraiture or figurative), as well his playful se of material. Screen printing and layering is something that I want to explore within my practise and feel that Baldessari is a perfect example of minimalism in this respect.

This will be explored in a later Blog post.
