Hair Punching

Hair Punching Needle (Types): http://www.makeup-fx.com/punching.htm Prep: I started by punching hair into my failed mask. There are two types of hair I want to use on the face and so I experimented with directional hair types as well as with my handmade punching tool in order to minimise risk on my actual mask. Making a handmade tool was a… Continue reading Hair Punching

Recasting – Day Project

After the failure of the previous casting, this second attempt was a chance to put into practise all that I have learnt in the previous casting. With this in mind, I aimed to have finished the recasting and refining within the day so not to lose too much time before the exhibition. After remoulding the… Continue reading Recasting – Day Project

Silicone Refinement

***before silicone glue was added. In preparation for the End of Year Exhibition it was important that made some important superficial refinements to the masks that are going to be displayed in the exhibition. In particular, this regards a silicone patch o the tempt of one of my masks that failed to cure properly. This left it… Continue reading Silicone Refinement

Painting Silicone Cast

http://blog.polytek.com/2015/02/26/tek-tip-painting-with-platsil-gel-10-silicone-pigments/ An important aspect of remanufacturing the human face is in the painting stage. Here I will add all of the vital colours and tones to really bring the mask to life, mores than its superficial textural representation. This video is instrumental for me in really adapting my drawing skills to this new avenue of work… Continue reading Painting Silicone Cast

Full Body Castings

“Intense observation of nature has been my primary teacher, followed by a close study of past masters and contemporary sculptors.”  http://digiqualia.blogspot.co.uk/2014/02/lets-talk-brian-booth-craig.html Leading on from my work last year, I am really looking to extend the scale of my castings. Skin Texture(s)

The finishing touches with the clay mask involve small pore details and skin textural inconsistencies being made to the casting. I really want to emphasise the hyperrealist nature LifeCasting and am trying to avoid smooth casting finishing techniques as much as possible. This involves modelling tools and a scalpel to make small marks onto the… Continue reading Skin Texture(s)

Sculpture & Texture

Layering: perhaps a clay/silicone layered depiction Found images that display some very interesting sculptural textures and shapes that could influence further castings within my practise. Although I remain interested in very hyperrealist depictions of the human face, I feel that more abstract, experimental depiction could also be an interesting comparison. Textual techniques: Full body casting that… Continue reading Sculpture & Texture

Lifecasting Photoshoot

I felt that it is important to document this process, and as a result I have used the photography studio to capture the details of my (2) Easy Flow Casts and the Monster Clay Busts before I make the necessary refining to the objects. This I  feel was successful in capturing the finer details of the… Continue reading Lifecasting Photoshoot

Monter Clay Casting

A secondary aspect of the casting is to create a clay bust. More in line with my experience of sculpture (as seen in the V&A and The British Museum), this I feel is an important part of the refining process. What (Monster) Clay Moulds will allow me to do is to really sharpen up at… Continue reading Monter Clay Casting

Remoulding Cast

This initial casting was very nerve-racking for me as I was unsure as to whether I had mixed together the correct quantity of Easy Flow (1A:1B). In addition, when looking at the initial drying period of the resin, I could see the mood itself sagging and creasing within the interior of the cast which signalled… Continue reading Remoulding Cast

Comparative Photos

As you can see there is great similarity between the car and the sitter. Although there is significant finishing that need to be cone to the cast(s), I feel that it will be greatly improved by casting in Clay and remoulding to make the details more smoother and defined, before resting in a silicone mould.

Easy Flow Casting

***Note that these cast(s) need to sanded significantly, with unwanted areas removed before being photographed in the photography studio in the following weeks In-Studio Imagery Cast 1: *** detail contained with this initial casting (i specific reference to the fair fibres and skin fragments over the entire profile of the face) has given me ideas in terms of the later Silicone Casting… Continue reading Easy Flow Casting

Collective Exhibition| UPDATED

There have been many changes to the idea of our collective exhibition, but as of this week we have finally settled on an idea that will satisfy the entire group and not be too rushed or ill considered the week before the exhibition. After a secondary 2:1 meeting with Theory Tutor (JDM) and Tutor (Elizabeth… Continue reading Collective Exhibition| UPDATED

Collaborative Research Catalogue

An important part is of the collaborative outcome is the production of the Collective Research Catalogue. something that above all unites all of our efforts, both together and individually we are exploring the research (images, quotes, videos’ etc.) that have universally contributed to our practise. To do this we are binding a book (100 pages, dedicating 16 pages to… Continue reading Collaborative Research Catalogue

Collective Exhibition

We have decided there need s to be a real emphasis on the theoretical research element of the exhibition. A lack of physicality is something very difficult to achieve in that it needs to be done in just the right measure to really communicate the stance we are aim at, whilst not looking as if we have neglected to do… Continue reading Collective Exhibition

A0 Print – Sometime A Photograph is All You Need!

As a follow on from the Uncreative Practise Workshop I feel that I have to make a lot more of the the photographic side of my practise. As it is such a large part of my process and the way I translate and re-translate my work into drawings, I plan to create an A0 Matte Print of the original image. There is a level… Continue reading A0 Print – Sometime A Photograph is All You Need!

A Part of our Exhibition will see my group p create a collaborative Research catalogue that details our collective research (through John Baldessari as well as any movements made within the collective process), as well as research from our individual practise (single focus practise, alongside images of our semi-completes/completed work). “To Be, or Not To Be, That is The Question…”

There have been many ups and downs too the exhibition proposal but as I group I feel that we have really come together to overcome the challenges that are afflicting our exhibition. Going from making a quasi-gallery gift-shop, to the complete obliteration of this idea, not the challenges that face our group is how to make… Continue reading “To Be, or Not To Be, That is The Question…”

The Selfie Monologues

As an extension of my drawing, I plan to create a A0-sized photographic print of my photographs. I feel that there is a strength to my photos that should be reflected upon more within my practise, removed form the finished drawing. In many ways, can the photograph not act as an accompaniment to the drawing,… Continue reading The Selfie Monologues

Zines

In response to some group discussions about the collective exhibition at the end of the term, I have decided about the style of my work and how it could be adapted to wrk as a Zine.   A Zine is a: zine/ziːn/ noun (informal) plural noun: ‘zines; plural noun: zines 1. a magazine, especially a fanzine. Expanding Materials

In order to improve the quality of my images this year, I have significantly expanded the types of drawing materials and implements I am using to create my drawings. From research over the summer, I know that more then the standard Graphite Pencils are often used in highly detailed images. To this, I have invested… Continue reading Expanding Materials

360 degrees Photoshoot

This year I have have decided to start developing and expanding the use of primary imagery within my work. Although appropriation is and will continue to a large focus within my work, I still want there to be similar emphasis on there being a strong primary image element to my work. This is made more important by the ongoing online image… Continue reading 360 degrees Photoshoot

The Poetry of the Human Face

In line with my discussion at my recorded Tutorial I have bought a A2 portfolio that will house my on-going sketched throughout this year. As I work slow, this will be useful in allowing me to produce continual work within one place (removed from a sketchbook or closed booklet). It will also encourage me to… Continue reading The Poetry of the Human Face

Online Portfolio

Much like sites such as Tumblr, Instagram and Pinterest, I aim this year to simply develop as site solely dedicated to displaying imagery that directly informs my practise. This I feel is useful for me as throughout the year I sift throughout so much imagery that I can barely mention in my practise due to… Continue reading Online Portfolio

A ‘Deconstruction’ of Traditional Modes of Portraiture – ‘A Sculptural Drawing’

Reflecting on my trend of my work last year, I really want to resist and explore further the idea of a deconstruction of a traditional portrait. Working on a larger scale this time, I plan to create another, more detailed layered drawing/sculpture. Much of the preparations were done in the summer  period, but I am… Continue reading A ‘Deconstruction’ of Traditional Modes of Portraiture – ‘A Sculptural Drawing’
